The Savoys, as they were originally called, started in the sixties and took the name from the Savoy Hotel in Berea Road. The band was led by the late Roy Simon (sax) and included his wife Shirley Simon on the piano. The band continued to play through the years with changes to the line up and after recording four albums, finally disbanded in 1980’s when the Simon family moved to Mossel Bay. Russell
Simon returned to Durban after several years and started the band under the name of “The Nu Savoys” to include some of the sons and grandsons of earlier members. The band consisted of, at some point in reforming, Roy Simon’s son, Russell Simon (drums), late Baby Duval’s son Shaun Duval (sax and vocals), grandson of Mervin Rampono, David Langley (keyboards) and Tennyson James who was part of the earlier line up. The current lineup is Russell Simon (drums),Tennyson James (bass) Edward Naidoo (keys) Kyle Oliver(vocals) and Chanelle Delpaul(vocals)
Music is an integral part of society. An expression of inner emotion, a celebration of life, and a symbol of everlasting memories, music remains at the core.Come an experience it live at KuD’Ta.
